Frequently Asked Questions
As a new company, what history do you have and what are your future plans?
The company may be new, but we’re hardly new to solving water problems! Jen Gould, Jen-Loc’s founder and owner, has spent 20 years in the industry where she’s earned a top-notch reputation for finding ways to solve water quality challenges. Starting this company was a way to help customers find affordable water systems to fix problem water, create jobs in our community, and be kind to the Earth. We aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon! We have created a product option that blows the rest out of the water, (pun intended!) and the media mineral rights available to us are more than we could exhaust in over 200 years. We are properly insured, licensed and seeking more accreditations each year.
Why do I need THIS product?
The short answer is that this is the best protection that your hard earned money can buy, to protect your family, pets and your investments. When you install a twin system (both positive and negatively charged media) you are utilizing a hyper adsorbent, salt free, eco-friendly sieve formation filter to remove or drastically reduce the contaminants in your water. In areas of special concentrations, we suggest doubling or tripling one cartridge type or the other.
What is the cost?
While our goal is to get this product into the hands of installers, these units are for sale directly to consumers here. Additionally, you will need to hire a (State) licensed plumber or qualified installer to properly install this system. Which system and whether you want pre- or post-filters or under counter “polisher” units all determines the price. For a simple under counter water filter system, you could be looking at $500. The replaceable cartridges would last anywhere from 6 months to 3 years — or more — depending upon your water quality.
What size water filter system would I need?
System size is determined by your water quality and the volume of water you use. An active household with 3+ bathrooms would be a strong candidate for Jen-Loc’s 20” system. A 10” system would be more appropriate for a household with 1-2 bathrooms and 2 people. An apartment dweller with no control over their main water feed could use the “Mini” or under counter treatment system as a polisher— also ideal for RVs and travel. How does this compare to my kitchen or pitcher mounted granular activated carbon (GAC) filter?
A common charcoal filter attached to a faucet or in a pitcher to “crisp up the taste” will fix some of the offending issues, but contaminants are attracted to the outside of the charcoal. As time passes, contaminants become more concentrated which is especially bad with bacteria. If it has been used to filter radon or arsenic, it needs to be specially handled for disposal. The NIC zeolite used in our units adsorbs the contaminants inside of it, essentially encapsulating it, rendering it “non-toxic.” It has an exceptionally long life compared to GAC and each of the two (2) minerals does its part removing the appropriate contaminant. Simply put, GACs are band-aids.
What is “media”?
When we are talking about material used in water treatment, Media refers to it in general terms (more aptly it should be medium -of exchange). In this case, our “media” is known as clinoptilolite zeolite. The natural deposits were formed with ancient volcanos and make an excellent medium for water filtration. It offers superior performance to sand and carbon filters, giving purer water and higher throughput rates with less maintenance.
I have an electrical output device that is installed on my water line at my on demand hot water heater. Does this do same thing?
That technology, known as anti-scale magnetic treatment (AMT), is intended to reduce the effects of hard water attaching to metal plumbing while water passes through a magnetic field — a non-chemical alternative to water softening. While this “suspends polarity” of the ions in the water as they pass between the two wire coils wrapped around your copper service pipe, the hard minerals revert back into solution once they clear that spot. Magnetic water treatment does not remove any calcium from the water.
I have a water softener that’s 20+ years old, this replaces that?
YES, say goodbye to salt!! The dual set configuration replaces a conventional water softener, also acts like an ultra-violet light system, a reverse osmosis system, and a natural acid neutralizer — for none of the extra cost or maintenance.
What is the white buildup/film on my dishes?
This is what we refer to as “hardness” a combination or calcium and magnesium carbonate. This is literally dissolved bedrock and is found almost anywhere in the World. While we see it accumulate on faucet and shower head fixtures, coffee machines and tea kettles, when exposed to increased heat in a dishwasher, it becomes more pronounced. This traditionally would have been removed with a water softener.
What is iron bacteria?
Iron Related Bacteria [IRB] is a natural but nuisance family of bacteria that create a slime layer and a rotten egg odor. Many people think that they have sulfur, but it often turns out to be this; it is also the #1 cause of the Jen-Loc water filtration cartridges seeming to stop working early, the slime covers the filtering pores and allows untreated water past the system. We always strongly suggest making sure that there is none in your water system before installing one of our products so that the system can get right to work solving your problem and not have to overcome this issue. We highly recommend having a ”salt chlorination” performed to strip the well/water source of your quality issues.
Do I need reverse osmosis?
Reverse Osmosis (POE) was designed to ensure that a point of use (faucet) or entire home (point of use) system provides water that is free from any traces of water hardness, salts, chemicals and TDS. The traditional installation also requires “pre-treatment” with a water softener, and the RO has at least three cartridges that need to be exchanged annually; this is quite costly and labor intensive. The Jen-Loc system requires no electricity or annual expensive cartridge change outs, the technology is contained in one unit. The peace of mind is in knowing that any contaminant that you couldn’t smell, taste or see is removed, is almost priceless; if there isn’t any contamination now, the cartridge life extends and the ROI (return on investment) becomes greater. Not everyone needs this removal, but it can’t hurt.
Do I need to add salt to my water?
With a traditional softener you would add salt to assist the ionic exchange, with a Jen-Loc system there is no salt, no chemicals and no monthly cost or physical labor getting salt into the basement. This technology filters out the contaminants instead of exchanging a soft mineral (salt) for the limited contaminants.
Do I need a separate water softener?
No, this technology replaces a water softener. If you have a relatively new water softener installed, you could install this system after that which would act as a polisher -removing all the extras that the softener couldn’t, and removes the salt added by the softener. Sending pre-softened water into our technology will only increase the expected lifespan of our cartridges.
How do I raise or my pH and why is it important?
Traditionally you would have to install a special water softener that raises pH or install an “acid neutralizer”, both require electricity and have sacrificial bio-degradable media. Our zeolite has a natural affinity to increase pH (buffer) while still performing all the other filtration aspects. With a dual cartridge system, any water passing through it will get contact twice to increase the pH. This is important because low/acidic pH causes copper plumbing to disintegrate from the inside out causing pin-hole leaks and blue-green staining of sinks and toilets.
I have a Commercial or Municipal level need, can your technology help?
Absolutely! This website is geared toward residential and portable installations, we have quite an array of offerings for commercial up through Municipal treatment set-ups. Every application is different and scaled for size and focus; please contact us today with your project information and we will get the discussion started.
